Church History
God has always revealed his
most choice secrets to humble folks. In 1873 Robert Ray Sr., Bro. Jacob
Cherry, Bro. Solomon Hampton, Bro. Hale Waters, Bro. Alfred Jefferson and bro.
Terrell Flakes saw that getting together was the beginning so they along with
their families and others built the first church.
A partial of land was deeded to
them by Mr. Dylir, at this time the church was located closer to Industry
below Mr. Knolles. Later it was moved in front of the Brethren Church. The
Church was named in honor of Bro.Jacob Cherry. The pastor at this time was
Bro. Bob Ray. In the early 19900’s a storm demolished the existing church.
Again the men began to rebuild the
church. The church at this time was located by the Brethren Church near the
Industry where a piece of land was donated. Bro. Isaiah Williams was local
pastor at this time; others were Rev. Bennett and Rev. Perkins. In 1904 the
trustees were Bro. Robert Ray Jr., Bro. Flakes Sr., Bro. Bob Cummings, Bro.
George Green and others.
In 1917 the Rev. w. Ellison was
the pastor at this time. Services were held at 11 a.m. Members would walk 4- 5
miles or ride by horse or buggy to be there on time. In 1931-1932 there was a
great change. The church was located a few feet from where it its today.
Rev.Wright was the pastor during this time; but before the church was
completed, he was called away. During this time period other pastors were the
Rev. Miller, Rev. Peoples, Rev.Ellison Jr., and others.
In 1944, the Rev. King was the
pastor. The trustees were Bro. Willie Toliver, Bro. George Quiller, Bro. Ben
Daniels, Arthur McGregor and Bro. Frank Robertson. Rev. King served several
years and under his leadership the first Women’s Society of Christian Service
was organized by Sis. Linda King and Sis. Melvina Watson. Some of the leading
of the church were Josephine Toliver who served Sunday school Superintendent
for more than 50 yrs.
Sis. Blanche Jones was the president
of the WSOCS for many yrs. Other women were Sis. Rosie Ray, Sis. Aurola Ray
and Sis. Mertle Ray who were communion stewardesses. Also, Sis. Elama Ray,
recording secretary and choir president, Sis Lucille Ray and Sis. Isabella
Daniels secretary and treasure for many yrs. Class leaders was Sis. Jettie
McGregor and Sis. Minnie Quiller.
During the 1960’s an 70’s some of the
trustees of the church were Bro. Van Ray, Bro. B.F. Smith, L.H. Harvey, S.
Gates, W.M. Perkins, Charles Chase, J.H. Holden Alfred Dickerson, P.M. Gates,
R. Huff, C.L. King , Rev. Baker, S.F. Moore, M.E. Hodges, S.M. Harvey, W.M.
Ellison, Rev.Watson and others.Rev. Sherman Franks came to the church in 1976.
The church underwent many changes. Under the leadership a cafeteria,
restrooms, pastor study, central ac and new pews were added. Rev. Franks and
his wife served for over 20 yrs. He retired in 1999. Some of the trustees were
Bro. Howard King, Bro Shelly Ray, Bro Arthur McGregor, Bro. Hurley King, Bro.
Lonnie Ray, Bro. Ben Daniels and others.
The church is progressing fast
in the 21st centaury with trustees Bro. Lonnie Ray Jr., Bro. Hurly
King, Bro. Robert Mays, Bro. Wilford McNeil and Sis. Ruby Evans. Sis Willie
Mae King, Sis. Ruby Evans and Bro. Hurly King are presently serving as
Communion stewards. Sis. Debra Taylor serves as secretary and Bro. Lonnie Ray
is treasure.
